But why exactly is this day celebrated as Women's Day?
The reason for celebrating a remarkable women's day is the numerous protests for improving working conditions caused by the rapid industrialization at the beginning of the 20th century. On March 8, 1857, there was the first significant demonstration of women workers in New York who came out to protest against poor working conditions. Two years later, the first women's trade union was formed. However, the most famous and massive women's protest in 1908 in New York included 15,000 women. Their main demands are a shorter working day, better pay and the right to vote.
What do we celebrate on March 8?
In 1977, the UN General Assembly decided March 8 to be International Women's Rights Day. In its long history until today, the holiday has established itself as a form of international recognition of women's economic, political and social achievements and rights.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall in the countries of the former socialist bloc, Bulgaria, the holiday became the centre of many heated public discussions, the spectrum of opinions of which extends from its extreme denial to its unreserved acceptance.

Since when is March 8 celebrated in Bulgaria?
In our country, the holiday began to be celebrated after September 9, 1944. And after 1960, the holiday became a favourite of women of all ages, as Women's Day and an opportunity to honour the mother. In Bulgaria, the day is often perceived as Mother's Day, although the Christian holiday of mothers and women is on March 25 - Annunciation. Bulgarian women love this day and consider it special. They expect respect and attention from their men.

The holiday began as a political event organized by socialists but continued naturally with demands for more rights for women.
Therefore, International Women's Day is considered a global day to celebrate women's social, economic, cultural and political achievements. In addition, the day is an occasion to speak and act for women's equality.
